I bought a new book, and I have carried it over to the cabin all week to read and admire after my morning chores at the barn. It is a beautiful tribute to a lady and her garden. It is written by a friend from high school. Martha Tate has had an exciting life writing, working with HGTV, and traveling while meeting gardeners and seeing fabulous places and plants. The garden in her book was discovered close to her home. It is the journey of Margaret Mosley, a late bloomer herself ...who started gardening after raising her children. The book is filled with colorful photos, quotes, and an insight into this remarkable woman's life. It also speaks volumes about its author, Martha Tate, who has given this 97 year old woman one of the most precious gifts and tributes that anyone could ever receive.

I suppose this book has hit close to home because my Mom is almost the age of Margaret Mosley. I found myself reading through tears...no, it is a very uplifting story, but yet it left a lump in my throat. I began thinking about the movie, "Blazing Saddles"... that line about the secret to life...that "one" thing. I now believe that one thing to be "passion"..a reason to get up every morning...something to look forward to seeing and anticipating...something that lights a fire in your heart and soul. It may be gardening or it may be something else, but it gives a person a reason for living. I know that my Mom is constantly plotting and planning something in the future...and yes, add a streak of stubbornness, but looking ahead instead of dwelling in the past is important. My Mom lived through a depression, a World War, having a spouse that was missing in action and then a POW..and then later lost him to Alzheimer's. She lost a child, too...and her parents, siblings, and now most of her friends. Not everyone will live to be 97, but however many years we are given on this earth, I hope that they are filled with our passions and a true will to live. This is my Mom a few weeks ago with her granddaughter!!!! She enjoyed a ride around the lake..on a 4 wheeler!! Something she had not done since the golf cart fire!

My Mom has always loved plants, too. At one time, she grew the most beautiful African Violets. Later years, it has been Christmas Cactus. About 3 years ago, she began giving away all of her flowers. She gave our oldest daughter one of her favorite cactus saying she could no longer see well enough to take care of it. The next year, my daughter brought her that cactus back as a gift at Christmas. It was in full bloom and thriving! My Mom told her that she would keep it until January and then give it back to her...but it still sits on her "bar stools and boards" planter in her kitchen window! I don't think my daughter minds! Just this week, we went on a great Christmas Cactus search, but we discovered it is a little early for them to be at the garden centers. My Mom plans to give all the grandchildren a cactus for Christmas...and add a few to her collection!
Lately, I have thought a lot about my life. This fall has been a little nostalgic. So many friends and family have passed away in the autumn months. I have written many more names on my Beech tree leaves this year. How grateful I am to have known them. Certainly family and friends are important, but within us all, I think that spark of our own passion needs to be in a self preserving part of our soul to help us to be who we are. I have thought about my passion...this place and all of its plants and critters, and I sometimes think that it has become an obsession. I have always felt a deep connection to this place. A Lakota Elder once told me that I have always been its caregiver. I simply know it's home.
I had forgotten that the deer were called White-tailed
Deer. Usually, they don’t run from me,

woods, probably hunting, but their trust in humans is gone. That is probably a
good thing..for them, but I enjoyed their greetings every morning. They are starting to come back…a few does and
their growing spotties come up for breakfast, and I have notice a single
little guy that hangs around the horses and the cabin. The deer can be hard to
identify, although some have faces that look almost like llamas, some are more
of a tan color, some have scars or jagged ears, and of course the bucks can be
identified by their antlers and coloring.

They are interesting to watch. It seems
that they have spotters that report back to the pack when something is discovered,
but to one who has ancient horses, it was a disturbing way to start the day.

chores were finished, I decided to investigate a little further. I took the trail above and behind the
cabin. I didn’t have to go too far
before I spotted the frenzy of eaters…and a deer on the ground. I didn’t go too far, but I could see that it
was a doe. I don’t know if she had been

Tonight at the barn, the little spring spottie was at the
barn, and again, it was by itself. By now, I had decided that it was the baby
of Little Blue, one of my favorites.
Deer have personalities just like people and pets. Some are grumpy and selfish, and some are
gentle, giving, and loving. Little Blue
was the doe that befriended a little mallard duck. (She got her name from her hound dog like face and big brown eyes.) The duck had an injured foot. It could fly, but it was hard for it to stand
or walk. Almost every morning, it would
fly up to where Little Blue was eating, and she would run off the other deer
and ducks so the little guy could eat. I
posted about them several times. She had her baby late in the spring, and I had
worried when she stayed in labor for several days. This little guy had spots up until hunting
season, and Blue was very protective of it…She would never leave it alone for
so long. I’m sure she taught Baby Blue well (a name I gave it as I sat on the
cabin porch tonight in tears)…and I’ll do my part to watch over it.

identified it as Lactarius indigo. Fascinated by the rich, deep color, I

Sounds like a few thunderstorms for the afternoon, so the dogs and I set off to check on the spillway. Yup, the beaver has been busy again, and we have decided that before summer, we need to get a tractor in here to scoop out all of the beaver's handiwork so the spillway for the lake will not be such a daily worry. As I dug, I began remember an article that was sent to me several years ago when we were dealing with another clan of beavers on the lake. Laughing and digging in almost knee deep water and mud, I decided to hunt up that article..and I found it!
Dear Mr. DeVries:

It has come to the attention of the Department
of Environmental Quality that there has been recent unauthorized activity on
the above referenced parcel of property. You have been certified as the legal
landowner and/or contractor who did the following unauthorized activity:

Construction and maintenance of two wood debris
dams across the outlet stream of Spring Pond.
A permit must be issued prior to the start of
this type of activity. A review of the Department's files shows that no permits
have been issued. Therefore, the Department has determined that this activity
is in violation of Part 301, Inland

Laws, annotated.

The Department has been informed that one or
both of the dams partially failed during a recent rain event, causing debris
and flooding at downstream locations. We find that dams of this nature are
inherently hazardous and cannot be permitted. The Department therefore orders
you to cease and desist all activities at this location, and to restore the
stream to a free-flow condition by removing all wood and brush forming t he
dams from the stream channel. All restoration work shall be completed no later
than January 31, 2006.
Dear Mr. Price,
Your certified letter dated 12/17/02 has been
handed to me to respond to. I am the legal landowner but not the Contractor at <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">2088 Dagget Lane</st1:address></st1:street>,
Trout Run, Pennsylvania.

A couple of beavers are in the (State
unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining two wood 'debris' dams
across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond. While I did not pay for, authorize,
nor supervise their dam project, I think they would be highly offended that you
call their skillful use of natures building materials 'debris.'

I would like to challenge your department to
attempt to emulate their dam project any time and/or any place you choose. I
believe I can safely state there is no way you could ever match their dam
skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam ingenuity, their dam persistence,
their dam determination and/or their dam work ethic.

These are the beavers/contractors you are
seeking. As to your request, I do not think the beavers are aware that they
must first fill out a dam permit prior to the start of this type of dam activity.

My first dam question to you is:

(1) Are you trying to discriminate against my
Spring Pond Beavers, or

(2) do you require all beavers throughout this
State to conform to said dam request?

If you are not discriminating against these
particular beavers, through the Freedom of Information Act, I request completed
copies of all those other applicable beaver dam permits that have been issued.

(Perhaps we will see if there really is a dam
violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and
Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being
sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws, annotated.)

I have several concerns. My first concern is,
aren't the beavers entitled to legal representation? The Spring Pond Beavers
are financially destitute and are unable to pay for said representation -- so
the State will have to provide them with a dam lawyer. The Department's dam
concern that either one or both of the dams failed during a recent rain event,
causing flooding, is proof that this is a natural occurrence, which the
Department is required to protect. In other words, we should leave the Spring
Pond Beavers alone rather than harassing them and calling them dam names.

If you want the stream 'restored' to a dam
free-flow condition please contact the beavers -- but if you are going to
arrest them, they obviously did not pay any attention to your dam letter, they
being unable to read English.

In my humble opinion, the Spring Pond Beavers
have a right to build their unauthorized dams as long as the sky is blue, the
grass is green and water flows downstream. They have more dam rights than I do
to live and enjoy Spring Pond. If the Department of Natural Resources and
Environmental Protection lives up to its name, it should protect the natural
resources (Beavers) and the environment (Beavers' Dams).

So, as far as the beavers and I are concerned,
this dam case can be referred for more elevated enforcement action right now.
Why wait until 1/31/2006? The Spring Pond Beavers may be under the dam ice then
and there will be no way for you or your dam staff to contact/harass them.

In conclusion, I would like to bring to your
attention to a real environmental quality, health, problem in the area. It is the
bears! Bears are actually defecating in our woods. I definitely believe you
should be persec uting the defecating bears and leave the beavers alone. If you
are going to investigate the beaver dam, watch your step! The bears are not
careful where they dump!

Being unable to comply with your dam request,
and being unable to contact you on your dam answering machine, I am sending
this response to your dam office.

THANK YOU,
Spring Wildflowers 2012

A walk around today looking for the spring wildflowers! It's been a strange year...a very warm winter and early spring, but it seems as though the wildflowers aren't enjoying the warmer temperatures! Early spring wildflowers, like Hepatica, began blooming in February, but they were nipped by a cold spell. Very few are blooming now. Bloodroot and Trillium seem stunted and fewer than usual. I'll keep watching. The treasure hunt is just beginning!

There is an unsettled feeling this morning. Storms are suppose to move in overnight. One of the jobs here at The Cabin Path is to make sure that the spillway (overflow creek) of the lake is open and flowing. In the last few years, this has not been a problem because of the drought. Also, a neighbor thinned the beaver population ( not my idea!...), so I did not have to constantly undo his handy work before every rain. Well, we've had rain, and we have a new beaver, so I noticed on my walk yesterday that he had once again stopped up the spillway!

Not that bad, just some sticks and packed mud, but it was enough to stop the flow of the water, and we are in for a night of heavy rain! I removed the sticks first, and the mud can then be dug out.
An old rotted
pine tree full of woodpecker holes caught my eye for this picture. It looked as
though it was adorned with a steeple of sorts…a design touch with a rustic
twist! A closer look revealed that it was the backbone of the old pine, or heartwood,
but it seemed to set this nesting spot apart from all the other ones. My own
picture made me wonder....what was that part of the pine tree called and how
was it formed?

There are many of these sculptures around in
the woods...a pine tree will die and rot away, and the center will remain
standing with twists and knots and gnarls...I always called it "wood
art" without much thought. I found
that they are the results of the pine resin in the tree. If a tree receives a
wound, the resin will rush to that spot to protect the scar. Resin also collects
in the heart, or center of the pine tree, and it resists decay.

it fatwood, stump candy, lighterd, lightern, lighter knot...many old time
names. I remember my Grandfather having a bucket of "lightern." He used it to start his fires, and it would
light with a match. I remember finding
stumps that he would chop up and save. Most chunks of lightern are sticky and smell
like crushed pine needles. They will light even when wet, and it has been a
valued firestarter as early as prehistoric times. I also read that too many
pieces in a wood stove can cause damage because of its extreme heat (something
I’m glad to know for the cabin!)

In my readings about fatwood or lightern,
not every fallen pine tree will make lightern. Pine resin will become more of a
solid, and if the tree falls or is cut at a certain time of the year, or if the
ground soil is a certain acidity, and if the tree is just the right condition
and had the right amount of sap when it was living, it will leave lightern. In
other words, it doesn’t happen all the time!

I have had other requests to come and remember loved ones and pets. I always envisioned a Remembrance Tree on the hill overlooking the cabin. I would love to have copper stamped leaves, but somehow, the simple Beech leaves do seem more appropriate for The Cabin Path!
It's been almost a year since my last children's workshop. I have missed them. Fall was always my favorite time with the Pioneer Workshops at the log cabin. We'd have a cabin dinner...either pot luck or veggie soup and cornbread on the old wood stove. We'd do "chores" and even have a one room school lesson, and then we would eat our lunch outside on straw bales and makeshift board tables.
I'd usually have my Tree Workshop in the fall, too. Everyone soon learned that one of my favorite trees here at TCP was the Beech. Beech tree leaves will stay on the trees through the winter. As the frosts and freezes come, their green leaves change to brown paper bag looking leaves. On windy winter days, they will dance and play their crackling songs. I always imagined that the Quaking Aspens have nothing on the Georgia Beech trees! Only the new spring growth will push off the brown bag leaves to make way for the new ones. The old leaves will then drop to the ground and help make new soil for all the living things in the woods.
Beech Tree in Winter

Yesterday, I received a phone call from one of the workshop family Moms. She asked if they could come by for a short visit. She knew that I no longer had my workshops, but she simply asked if they could come for a short visit. I gladly agreed. Frankly, I was not sure which family it was...they had attended several of the workshops, but they had not been one of the regular groups. I recognized them as their car drove up to the Gathering Room. The little boy, about 7 or 8, excitedly got out of the car and gave me a big hug. He then said, Ms. Sarah, my Nanna died!!" His Mom nodded, "Yes, last week, and it's been hard to explain it all to him."
I felt honored that they thought of TCP as a place to visit, a place to heal. I asked if they wanted to take a walk, and they both agreed, but not before they got their sacks to collect things along the trails. I also noticed that he went by the marker jar, but I assumed that he might be going to journal some, too. As we walked, they remarked about the changes. The bright blue sky and the autumn fireworks...it was a perfect day for a walk. As we walked the path above the cabin, he stopped and took out his marker. "Ms. Sarah," he said, "I want to write Nanna's name on one of the Beech leaves." His Mom smiled and said that it was all he had talked about since his Grandmother's death. He wanted to put her name on a Beech leaf so it would dance in the wind and stay until spring, and then it would help other things to live. I felt a huge lump in my throat, and I know my teared up eyes were obvious! He had remembered. Every fall, we would write our names with black permanent markers on the green Beech leaves. We'd watch them all winter as we walked the trails, and then we'd see them turn brown. The names would remain on the faded brown leaves. I was always amazed that each child remembered where their leaf was. Sometimes they would take their brown leaves back to press them in a book, but most wanted them to fall naturally and help the forest to grow.
"What a wonderful gift for Nanna!" I told him.
"I told Nanna about writing my name on the leaves," he said. "She wanted to write her name on one, too...and now there's her name!"

We continued our walk on the trails. We stopped off at the labyrinth cove and sat in the sunshine while he threw rocks and sticks and looked for bugs and dragonflies. I did not take my camera on our walk, but I returned to take a picture of Nanna's legacy. Such a simple gesture, a simple gift, but it will forever touch me...and Nanna.

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are
also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they can become your blessings.
My walk to the barn this morning....a hint of fall! The ground was wet from the rains the night before, and the fog on the lake looked like dancing ghosts. Everything felt clean and crisp...good for the soul.
The summer has been brutally hot and humid..and stormy! Earlier this summer, we lost about 30 trees from a storm. Straight line winds, I'm guessing. It wasn't a large area, but it did some damage. A friend cut the trees to clear the roadway to the barn, and the others will wait for cooler weather. The "dry" then "wet" seasons have weakened the trees, and many old friends are falling.

Nature seems to endure all hardships...and go on to be stronger. Change is continuous, sometimes cruel, but miracles prevail!

Earlier this spring, I watched for the Pileated Woodpeckers to nest in their usual spot. The tall dead Pine has been home to several generations of these large, majestic birds. I often took my morning coffee up to watch them feed and care for their babies. The "first flights" were magical..the low clucking of the proud parents would eventually give the babies enough confidence to venture outside the hole, and the flapping of their tiny wings while clinging to the tree was almost comical. Lessons were learned quickly, and they all would loop through the woods hunting for bugs and practicing life skills.

This spring, they did not nest in that old Pine tree. I wondered if the parents were gone. I had heard their calls, but yet I wondered if they were all right. I had noticed new holes in a Pine tree behind the dam. The oval shaped opening led me to believe that it was indeed a Pileated's home, but I missed my mornings with them. Perhaps this was the younger generation, and they wanted a change!

My walk around last week took me took me to the woods in front of the house. As I walked by the old, abandoned Pine tree, I paused to take a picture of it...in fact, I had walked past it and returned to inspect it more closely. Something seemed to make me go back and take this picture. It was still empty, but it stood tall and stark against the green of the woods. As I paused, I had feeling of sadness, but I did not understand.

Another storm over the weekend. A limb crashed through my back windshield as I was returning from feeding the horses. A scary sound, but nothing that can't be repaired. Something earlier in the day had told me to park in a different spot, (and I did) but I had been rushing to beat the next approaching storm, and I pulled down to be closer to turn off the pump to the barn. Still, that voice had warned me earlier. Intuition.... that small voice that I ignored.

Another walk around yesterday...and back to the front woods. As I rounded the curve, something was not the same. As I got closer to the tall, white monument Pine that had been home to many generations of Pileated Woodpeckers, I realized that it had fallen in the storm over the weekend. Was this the reason that it was not used for the spring babies? If so, how did they know? And was that the reason for my quiet reflection and the photo from last week?

Animals seem to be blessed with a keen sense of intuition. I have read about animals that sense earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters. There are service dogs that are used to predict seizures in people, and I even notice that our horses can predict storms and severe weather changes. The birds and deer intuitively know when strangers are in the woods, and I think most of us have heard those "voices" from time to time. Is it that we are often too busy to listen, or is it that we don't want to listen? Is it an acquired gift, or a random

happening?

Perhaps that is why I love The Cabin Path. Its quietness and beauty is a blessing that I do not take lightly, and as years go by, I am realizing the true miracles in this life. Within each of us are gifts that are waiting to be discovered and explored. We all have these voices, and too many times, they are ignored.

Albert Einstein once said,

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

May I always be grateful for life's gifts...great and small.
The heat this summer has been severe. Many, many days of 90 + temps..and heat advisories. We have been skipped by most of the afternoon showers with the exception of some damaging storms. I have not spent the time outdoors that I normally do, and perhaps that is why I have missed this addition to the landscape for as long as I have. While sitting on the cabin porch, I noticed a bump on the roof of the hay shed. At first, I thought it to be the old fat possum that visits from time to time. I thought he had climbed the pole to escape some predator, and he was now trapped by the light of day. As I neared the "critter"... I soon realized that it was a nest of hornets! How had I missed seeing it?? How many times had I put hay in the shed and walked right under it..and NOT seen it or at least the hornets?!

I thought back to some morning back in late spring when there would be several hornets on the porch of the cabin. They were attempting to build from the rafters of the cabin porch. I had resorted to using some spray on them, and then I repeatedly tore down the paper stub they had made to start their nest. This was a morning ritual for over a week until one day, they gave up.

In reading more about these insects, I found many interesting facts. They are not true "hornets" and they are in the wasp family and closely related to the yellow jacket. They will attack if provoked, and they can sting multiple times.

http://depts.washington.edu/natmap/facts/bald-faced_hornet_712.html

I plan to leave the nest undisturbed until winter. These nests are rarely reused, and the queen will hide away in tree stumps and protected places until spring...and not in the nest. I have recovered several nests over the years at The Cabin Path. The paper nests are beautifully designed pieces of art, and we have used the paper in many projects (fairy wings, dragonfly wings, nature journal pages, etc)

I am not thrilled that these Bald - Faced Hornets have built so closely to the horses and the cabin, but they have not bothered anyone. Now that I am aware of the nest, I will be careful not to disturb them, and I am willing to share the space. They are interesting to watch, and they play an important part in our eco-system.

The Archaeological DIG a couple of weeks ago generated much interest around The Cabin Path's Groups (Yahoo Home School, Facebook, and Website) By request, the Summer Workshop kids wanted to have DIG of their own! Since the majority of this group were 4- 6 year olds, I needed to think of more activities! I knew that the actual "Dig" involved hard work...and this younger group's attention spans might not last. (and it was really hot!)
We began our workshop with a box of dog treats, a dog leash, and a dog collar. I asked them to pretend that they were detectives, and that these 3 things were clues. Of course they guessed that I had a dog..or that a dog might be nearby. I told them that archaeologists used the clues that they uncover to know what might have lived in the area of their dig! We then looked at the box of artifacts that have been found here over the years at The Cabin Path. The arrowhead points and the Mississippian pottery pieces are always fun to see and hold, and I had a fossil of a fish that I have had for years. (a gift..not from The Cabin Path!) We talked about how fish, animals, insects, and even bones get trapped between layers of rock..and how fossils are formed.

Next was our art activity....the old Plaster of Paris fossil making!! Over the years, I have learned a few tricks to making fossils. We started with a paper bowl. Names were written on the bottom and then filled with about 1-2 inches of sand. We then picked our fossils! Nature found objects (leaves, thin bark, feathers, etc) are beautifully preserved, but most of this group elected to find "bugs" from the boxes of plastic animals and insects that we use in sand play. I had pre-measured the Plaster of Paris in cups, and when the fossils were arranged in the bowls and sand, I added water and a little brown paint..and they stirred to make a thick milkshake consistency. We then poured the plaster over the fossil...but NOT moving the bowl! A little "tap" on the sides to remove air bubbles, and we then left them to cure. I have to admit, they turned out great! The sand and paint gives them a more realistic look.
We walked over for the DIG while the fossils hardened.
After digging and sifting, we then visited the Native American hill that has a rock formation that was used for ceremonies. The large rocks are arranged within double rock circles. They mark the directions North, South, East, and West...to suggest that they were used as a calendar using the sun and the moon.
A fun day...learning about the past and how archaeologist uncover clues and learn from the past. We even talked about some of the things that archaeologist would discover about us! It even led to a discussion about conserving and our environment today. The Cabin Pathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11866647093107450306noreply@blogger.com0
